ALEC - Relying on the Fact That Americans Do Not Know What is Going On!

We have to be careful about possible complacency in thinking that others know about the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).  We must make sure that we are continually reaching out to others to educate them on ALEC.  We must keep our message strong and consistent going forward as the momentum from our actions starts to get more notice.  It is through the writing of others that our message will grow and maintain it's momentum against ALEC.

In a recent article that was published by John Dean in Justia  - Yes, THE John Dean
John Dean served as Counsel to the President of the United States from July 1970 to April 1973.  Before becoming White House counsel at age thirty-one, he was the chief minority counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the US House of Representatives, an associate director of a law reform commission, and an associate deputy attorney general at the US Department of Justice.

He stated (my bolding)
I first noticed ALEC during the Bush II years when I read a Mother Jones article about what was described as “one of the nation’s most powerful—and least known—corporate lobbies.”  Even then, ALEC had already been “ghost writing” state laws for nearly a decade.  Yet I’d not heard of ALEC before.

And he comes to some of the following conclusions
ALEC has been amazingly successful in accomplishing its never-ending goals on behalf of conservatives, as well as its corporate agenda, at the state level.  It has written thousands of laws that benefit corporate America, and conservative causes—often at the expense of the greater public good, and more often, unknown to most Americans.

Republicans simply rely on the reality that an overwhelming majority of Americans do not know what is going on; that the well-funded Republican public-relations barrage targeting Americans will keep the American people focused on less than vital issues; and that the corporate underwriters who fund this devious behavior believe they are doing what corporation are suppose to do, which is to make profits, so they simply laugh all the way to their off-shore banks.

This article stresses the fact that those "in power" have known about ALEC and done nothing about it 'cause they viewed ALEC as harmless.  Those "in power" allowed ALEC to continue to grow in power - because they didn't see the danger in ALEC.

We now know ALEC is harmful  - and now we have at least one person "who was in power" who has come forward with his take on the ALEC situation. Hopefully others "in power" will step up to the plate - before it's too late.

WE MUST continue our battle against ALEC - educating others and not letting the destruction of ALEC be ignored any longer.

REMEMBER - ALEC is the epitome of CORPORATE GREED.  They want not only all the prosperity - but they want our government also.

For more information on ALEC –

And watch this news video  from North Carolina on how other ALEC "model legislation" is going to screw the citizens of North Carolina - legislation introduced by ALEC legislators.

*****************

WE MUST Remove all ALEC members and ALEC Alumni from our state legislatures and the US Congress.

A vote for an ALEC legislative candidate -
is a vote for greater pro-corporate representation and legislation  in your state,
is a vote against small and medium size business in your state,
is a vote against representative government for the people, and
is a vote against the very beliefs of the United States of America.
