CT Corps Refuse to DumpALEC

If you think we are winning the battle in educating people about the power and influence of ALEC in destroying our democracy – think about these two comments posted on an ALEC editorial about a couple of months ago.

" This guy is a liberal. Enough said. He needs to publish his opinions in New York. "

" And if after you read this and actually think it's compelling in any way, you can put your tinfoil hat back on and start looking for those black helicopters again. Funny how the left has a problem with democracy -- if the competition of ideas goes against what it wants, there's always some bogeyman to blame. "

When activists first started reporting on ALEC – we were all accused of wearing tin foil hats.

But as more and more information comes out – this is not about tin foil hats – this is about a fact based defense against an ALEC agenda of destruction of the US democracy and economy.

Diageo spokeswoman Rachel Rosenblatt said the liquor company, headquartered in Norwalk, has no comment on its relationship with ALEC. Diageo is not a rank-and-file member. It is on the organization's "Private Enterprise" board and must pay yearly dues of at least $25,000.

Diageo is on the ALEC Private Enterprise Board.

Not a rank and file member??????
Diageo is either a LIAR     or maybe they consider lowly ALEC legislators as rank and file and Diageo North America, Inc.,  as a corporate member is among the American Legislative Exchange Council elite member list.

GE spokesman Andrew Williams said the Stamford-based company belongs to ALEC because "engagement with groups like this helps GE meet and develop relationships with other member companies and state legislative leaders."

Williams also said GE's engagement with ALEC focuses on fiscal, legal and environmental policy issues. "We have not been involved with ALEC on social responsibility issues," he said.
Oh yes you are!!!!
GE - you are complicit for every nasty thing that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) does.

Purdue Pharmaceuticals, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco and Boehringer Ingelheim did not respond to requests for comment.
I wonder why????????
Ashamed of your membership with the anti-democratic, “we don’t want everybody to vote”, American Legislative Exchange council (ALEC) – I would be.

"Firms that remain in ALEC, despite its involvement in a scheme to defraud the IRS and its advocacy of legislation that puts private profit ahead of the public interest, have some explaining to do," Edgar said.
YES THEY DO!!!

And to reinforce that from other sources;
Civil rights advocates get it – why doesn’t the whole US get it?

“ALEC is a creature of evil,” that few people understand, said Bill Fletcher, labor and civil rights activist and creator of {BlackCommentator.com}. “Hiding under the shroud of a nonprofit, this is a highly politicized outfit that provides ammunition for the Far Right to carry out its state-based initiatives.”

And you have these statement snips from the IRS complaint reported on Roll Call earlier this month

ALEC is significantly misrepresenting its activities to the IRS< the states, and the public in order to advance a legislative agenda – an agenda largely crafted by the organization’s corporate members – that elevates commercial gain for the few over the well-being of society’s less fortunate.

Excessive private benefit for corporate members, including the promotion of legislation applicable to only on or a small number of corporate members;

ALEC’s members include not only state legislators (“legislative Members”), but also representatives from private corporations (“Private Sector Members”).  As described below, Private Sector Members pay steep fees for the privilege of membership, which gives them access to the Legislative Members and voice in setting ALEC’s legislative agenda.

Williams also said GE's engagement with ALEC focuses on fiscal, legal and environmental policy issues. "We have not been involved with ALEC on social responsibility issues," he said.

OH YES YOU ARE!!
GE - you are complicit for every nasty thing that the American Legislative Exchange council (ALEC) does.
GE, you paid dues that allowed all this nastiness to be able happen - you are involved.

All of the companies that belong to the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) are complicit through their funding of ALEC – to EVERYTHING that ALEC does.

This is NAACP President Benjamin Jealous talking about ALEC during his address to the group’s annual convention Monday.

BENJAMIN JEALOUS: And that is why I say here to the American Legislative Exchange Council, ALEC, who has so efficiently replicated Stand Your Ground laws around this country, voter suppression methods from coast to coast: the blood of every adult and child who is wrongfully killed because of these laws is on your hands. And if it comes to pass that we find that this election was stolen in advance, the way that that politician in Pennsylvania believes it already has been, then we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

Diageo North America, Inc.,  we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

GE spokesman Andrew Williams, we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

Purdue Pharmaceuticals, we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

U.S. Smokeless Tobacco , we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

Boehringer Ingelheim, we will ensure that the shame is placed squarely on your shoulders, too.

Many Thanks – to Common Cause for sorting out CURRENT Corporate Profit Sector members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (actively participating with ALEC task forces during the period of 2010 – May 2012) for researcher use.
